Chemical Profiling of Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia Resin and Essential Oil: Ageing Markers and Antimicrobial Activity

Chios Mastic Gum (CMG) and Oil (CMO) are two unique products of the tree Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, cultivated exclusively on Greek island Chios. In present study, method proposed by European Pharmacopoeia for mastic identification was employed using HPTLC together with an in-house method. A GC-MS methodology also developed chemical characterization CMOs. α-Pinene β-myrcene were found in abundance fresh oils; however, oil aged collection, oxygenated monoterpenes benzenoids such as verbenone, pinocarveol, α-campholenal at highest rates. Additionally, antimicrobial activity Gums (CMGs) their respective Oils (CMOs) evaluated, growth tests against fungi Aspergillus nidulans, fumigatus, Candida albicans, Mucor circinelloides, Rhizopus oryzae, bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bacillus subtilis, samples exhibiting a moderate activity. To our knowledge, this is first time that analysis its essential standardized followed distillation CMO parallel assessment ageing effect oil’s composition.
